What makes Hawaii different
Hawaii has 12 brackets and a top rate of 11%, second only to California, and the 7.6% rate starts at just $48,000 for single filers. A 2024 law (Act 46) is phasing in large cuts: the standard deduction nearly doubled for 2026 and brackets widen again in 2027 and 2029. Hawaii also requires temporary disability insurance, part of which employers can withhold from pay.
- Act 46 (2024) raised Hawaii’s standard deduction to $8,000 single / $16,000 joint for 2026 and widened the brackets starting in 2025.
- Each personal exemption is $1,144.
- Hawaii Temporary Disability Insurance (TDI) lets employers withhold up to 0.5% of weekly wages (capped); it is not included.
