    What makes California different

California has the highest top marginal income tax rate in the country: 12.3% at the top bracket plus a 1% Mental Health Services Tax on taxable income over $1 million. Most workers also pay State Disability Insurance (SDI), which has no wage cap since 2024. On the plus side, California’s low brackets are taxed lightly, and a renter’s credit and other credits are available at lower incomes.

    • California adds a 1% Mental Health Services Tax on taxable income over $1,000,000, which this calculator includes.
    • SDI (State Disability Insurance) is withheld at 1.3% of all wages in 2026 with no wage cap.
    • Dependent exemption credits ($491 each) and other credits are not included.
