Sales tax is a percentage of the purchase price set by your state plus any county, city or district rates. Use the combined rate for your location.

Tax = Price × rate · Total = Price × (1 + rate)
Pre-tax price = Total ÷ (1 + rate)

Five states (Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon) have no statewide sales tax, though some Alaska localities do.
Many states exempt or reduce tax on groceries and prescriptions.

“Add tax” gives the total you’ll pay at checkout. “Remove tax” works backward from a receipt total to the original price and the tax included.

Your rate is usually state plus county and city; check your local combined rate.
Some states exempt groceries or clothing, or tax them at lower rates.

Multiply the price by the tax rate as a decimal: $50 × 0.08 = $4 tax, $54 total.

Divide the total by 1 plus the rate: $108 ÷ 1.08 = $100.

Check your state department of revenue website. Most offer a rate lookup by address.

Because tax was calculated on the pre-tax price, you must divide by (1 + rate), not subtract a percentage of the total.

If you itemize, you can deduct state and local sales tax instead of income tax, subject to the SALT cap.
