How overtime is calculated
Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), non-exempt employees must be paid at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours worked over 40 in a workweek.
Gross pay = 40 × rate + overtime hours × rate × 1.5 (+ double-time hours × rate × 2)
At $22 an hour for 48 hours: 40 × $22 = $880 regular, plus 8 × $33 = $264 overtime, for $1,144.
State rules
Some states go further. California requires 1.5× for hours over 8 in a day and 2× over 12 in a day; a few other states also have daily overtime rules. Enter double-time hours separately if they apply to you.
Regular rate
Non-discretionary bonuses, shift differentials and commissions must be included in the “regular rate” used for overtime, which can raise the overtime rate above 1.5× base pay.
Taxes on overtime
The 2025 budget law created a federal income tax deduction for qualified overtime premium pay (up to $12,500, or $25,000 joint, for 2025–2028); Social Security and Medicare taxes still apply.
Worked example
With these inputs: regular hourly rate $22; total hours worked this week 48; overtime multiplier 1.5.
The calculator gives a gross pay this week of $1,144.00 (8.00 overtime hours). Other results: regular pay (40.00 h) $880.00, overtime pay (8.00 h × 1.5) $264.00, overtime rate $33.00/h, average hourly $23.83.
What your results mean
Gross pay is before taxes and deductions. The overtime rate is the hourly amount you earn for each hour past 40 at your multiplier.
Tips
- Track hours daily; small rounding errors add up.
- Check your state for daily overtime rules.
- Ask whether bonuses are included in your regular rate.
