    How net worth is calculated

Net worth = total assets − total liabilities

Assets include cash, investments, retirement accounts, your home and vehicles at current market value. Liabilities include your mortgage, car loans, student loans, credit card balances and any other debt.

    Useful breakdowns

    • Home equity = home value − mortgage.
    • Liquid net worth excludes home and retirement accounts, showing what you could access quickly.
    • Debt-to-asset ratio shows how leveraged you are; lower is safer.

    How to use it

A single number matters less than the trend. Recalculate every 6–12 months; growing net worth means you’re saving, paying down debt or investing successfully. Vehicles lose value quickly, so don’t count them at purchase price.

    Worked example

With these inputs (main ones shown): cash & savings $15,000; brokerage investments $30,000; retirement accounts $85,000; home value $350,000; vehicles $18,000; mortgage $240,000; car loans $12,000; student loans $20,000.

The calculator gives a your net worth of $223,000 ($498,000 assets − $275,000 liabilities). Other results: debt-to-asset ratio 55.2%, home equity $110,000, liquid net worth $42,000, net worth excl. home $113,000.

    What your results mean

Net worth is what would be left if you sold everything and paid off all debts. Liquid net worth shows how much is accessible without selling your home or tapping retirement accounts.

    Tips

    • Use realistic resale values, not purchase prices.
    • Track it on the same date each year.
    • Focus on increasing savings and reducing high-interest debt.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my net worth?

List all assets at current value and all debts at current balance, then subtract debts from assets.

Does net worth include home equity?

Yes. Your home’s value is an asset and the mortgage is a liability, so equity is included.

What is a good net worth by age?

A popular guideline (from The Millionaire Next Door) is age × pre-tax income ÷ 10. The Federal Reserve’s Survey of Consumer Finances publishes median net worth by age.

Should I include my retirement accounts?

Yes, but remember traditional 401(k) and IRA balances will be taxed when withdrawn.

    Is negative net worth bad?

It’s common early in a career, especially with student loans. Focus on moving the number up over time.
