    How much is enough?

An emergency fund covers essential expenses if you lose income or face a large unexpected bill. The usual guideline is 3 to 6 months of essential expenses, not total spending.

Target = essential monthly expenses × months of coverage
    • 3 months: stable job, dual income, good insurance.
    • 6 months: single income or dependents.
    • 9–12 months: self-employed, commission or seasonal income, or a specialized job that takes longer to replace.

    Where to keep it

Keep it liquid and safe: an FDIC- or NCUA-insured high-yield savings or money market account. Not in stocks, and not tied up in a CD with large penalties.

    Building it

Start with a smaller goal, such as $1,000 or one month, then keep going. Automate a monthly transfer and add windfalls.

    Worked example

With these inputs (main ones shown): rent / mortgage $1,600; utilities & phone $300; groceries $500; transportation $350; insurance & medical $300; minimum debt payments $250; other essentials $200; months of coverage 6.

The calculator gives a 6-month emergency fund target of $21,000 ($3,500 of essential expenses per month). Other results: still needed $17,000, time to fully fund 3 yr 3 mo, funded by Jan 2030, months covered today 1.1.

    What your results mean

The target is enough to cover essential bills for the months you chose. Months covered today shows how long your current savings would last.

    Tips

    • Count only essentials, not dining out or travel.
    • Keep the fund in a separate high-yield savings account.
    • Refill it promptly after you use it.

    Frequently asked questions

How much should be in an emergency fund?

Three to six months of essential expenses for most people; more if your income is irregular.

How much is a 6-month emergency fund on $3,500 of expenses?

    $21,000.

Should I save an emergency fund or pay off debt first?

Many planners suggest a starter fund (one month or $1,000–$2,000) first, then attack high-interest debt, then finish the full fund.

Does an emergency fund count toward savings goals?

Keep it separate so you don’t spend it on planned purchases.

    Is unemployment insurance enough?

State benefits replace only part of wages, for a limited time, and can take weeks to start.
