CD interest is taxed as ordinary income each year

How to use the CD calculator

    1. Enter your numbers. Fill in deposit, APY, term, tax rate on interest.
    2. Read your results. Results update instantly. The headline shows the value at maturity; the breakdown and table below show the details.

    How CD interest is calculated

Banks quote CDs by APY, which already includes compounding. That makes the math simple:

    Maturity value = Deposit × (1 + APY)months ÷ 12

A $10,000, 12-month CD at 4.10% APY earns $410. At 18 months, the same APY earns about $622.

    CD ladders

A ladder splits money across several maturities (for example 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 years). As each CD matures you reinvest at the longest term, so part of your money is always becoming available while most earns longer-term rates.

    Things to check

    • Early withdrawal penalty: often 3–12 months of interest.
    • Insurance: FDIC or NCUA covers up to $250,000 per depositor, per bank, per ownership category.
    • Taxes: interest is taxed as ordinary income in the year it’s credited, even if you don’t withdraw it.

    Worked example

With these inputs: deposit $10,000; APY 4.1%; term (months) 12.

The calculator gives a value at maturity of $10,410.00 ($410.00 interest over 12 months). Other results: interest earned $410.00, after-tax interest $410.00, monthly interest (avg.) $34.17, APY 4.1%.

    What your results mean

Value at maturity is what you’ll have when the CD term ends, if you don’t withdraw early. After-tax interest shows what you keep after income tax on the interest.

    Tips

    • Compare the APY with high-yield savings, which has no lockup.
    • Check the early withdrawal penalty before opening.
    • Use a ladder to keep some money accessible every year.

    Frequently asked questions

How much interest will $10,000 earn in a 1-year CD?

    At 4% APY, $400; at 4.5% APY, $450.

    Is CD interest taxable?

Yes, as ordinary income each year it’s credited, unless the CD is in an IRA.

Is APY or APR better for comparing CDs?

APY, because it includes compounding. Most banks quote CDs by APY.

Can you lose money in a CD?

Not principal in an insured bank CD held to maturity. An early withdrawal penalty can exceed the interest earned on short CDs.

What happens when a CD matures?

There’s usually a 7–10 day grace period to withdraw; otherwise it often renews automatically at the current rate.
